Medium: Beaded Pouches, Fused Glass Beads

Nola Vagner, known to many as "Misha", has been an artist for most of her life.  Born and raised in Afognak Village in the 1950s and 1960s, she is descended from the Mullan, von Scheele, Gregorioff, Erikalov, Chernikoff, Zyrianov, and Ladygin (of Atka) families.  Her grandfathers Herman von Scheele and Barney Mullan settled in Afognak to raise their families. She is grateful for their choice.  According to Misha, "It is a very beautiful, spiritual, serene, artistic, natural environment."

In Afognak village, Misha's great grandmother Parscovia "Babushka" Erikalov Gregorioff was the village midwife and her grandmother, Eulavia Gregorioff was a seamstress.  Both ladies were artists, as was Misha's mother, Enola von Scheele Mullan, who created flowers from the sea shells gathered on Afognak's beaches.

"All this creativity was handed down to me at a young age - beginning with embroidery," says Misha.  "My love of beads and glass has been part of me for quite some time.  I've attended classes in glass fusing, lampworking, and metalsmithing at the Arrowmont School, Appalachian Center for Crafts, and John C. Campbell Folk School."

"My beading got a helpful hand from Alutiiq artist Susan Malutin during the summer of 2006.  In the summer of 2007, Susan helped me again - and that's what I needed to begin this creative journey."
