Donations

When a donor comes to us with a potential gift, we consider many things. Does the object meet our mission? What stories can it tell us? Does the donor have the legal right to give the piece away? Is it something we know how to care for?  Where will we put it? Accepting an object means that we are agreeing to provide it with exceptional care, so we consider every possible donation very carefully.

To assist with such decisions, the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation appoints eight community members to serve on a Collections Advisory Committee. These knowledgeable volunteers help us evaluate the items offered to the museum and make recommendations to the Foundation's Board of Directors for their final review.

Loans

The Alutiiq Museum also accepts collections for long term curation from Alutiiq organizations, government agencies, and private individuals and organizations.  Long term loans can be negotiated for collections that meet the Alutiiq Museum's mission.  Like donations, each long term loan must be reviewed by the museum's Collections Advisory Committee and then considered by the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation for final approval.  Researchers who wish to curate collections at the Alutiiq Museum are encouraged to contact the museum far in advance of their planned activities as the review process can take up to 6 months.

In Coming Collections

Researchers and institutions preparing collections for curation at the Alutiiq Museum should consult our curatorial guidelines, available for download below.  Additional information on storing collections with the museum can be found on the Collections Care page of this web site, in the three major policies the govern Alutiiq Museum collections.
