Sharing Heritage in Rural Schools
Each spring, we travel to Kodiak's rural communities during Alutiiq Week celebrations. Artists accompany staff members to work with students, who complete their own arts projects with inspiration from ancestral designs and modern experiences. The program debuted in 2001 with lessons on grass basket weaving and has continued with lessons in carving, fish skin sewing, steam bending, and kayak building. This project is a partnership with the in partnership with the Kodiak School District.
