These closely related herbaceous plants often form hybrids. People sometimes call both species bunchberries. They are characterized by large white, petal-like bracts that encircle a cluster of tiny dark flowers. Both species have whorled, oval leaves and reddish colored, mealy fruit with large seeds. They occur in woods, tundra, and alpine areas. 

Food: Eaten as found but not harvested in quantity.
